Set during the Second Seminole War in 1840s Florida, the film follows Captain Quincy Wyatt, an army officer who leads a small force into the Everglades. Their mission is to strike at a fort used by weapons smugglers who are supplying rifles to the Seminole fighters, and to free the captives held there. After the raid succeeds, the soldiers and the people they have rescued must make their way back through swamp and jungle while evading pursuit, a journey that draws Wyatt close to one of the freed prisoners, Judy Beckett.
Gary Cooper plays Wyatt, with Mari Aldon as Judy, Richard Webb as Lieutenant Richard Tufts, and Ray Teal, Arthur Hunnicutt and Robert Barrat in supporting roles. Raoul Walsh directed from a screenplay by Martin Rackin and Niven Busch, with Milton Sperling producing for Warner Bros. The film was released in December 1951 and runs 101 minutes. By the chronology given here it is the seventeenth of the twenty-three features Walsh directed, coming after Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. and before The Enforcer, placing it in a period when he was working steadily across adventure and crime subjects.
Audience response has been moderate and durable rather than enthusiastic. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 2,600 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.3, from a much smaller base of about 88 ratings. The larger IMDb sample suggests a settled, mildly favorable reputation among viewers who seek out studio adventure films of the early 1950s.
