Brothers
Short description
Michael is a Danish army officer with a promising career, a wife named Sarah and two young daughters. His younger brother Jannik has drifted through life on the edges of the law. When Michael is deployed to Afghanistan with the International Security Assistance Force, his helicopter goes down during a search mission and he is reported dead, though he has in fact been taken prisoner. At home, Jannik steps in to help Sarah and the children through their grief, and the two grow closer than either expected. Michael eventually returns, changed by what he endured in captivity.
Susanne Bier directed and co-wrote the film with Anders Thomas Jensen and Linda Daae. It was her first feature after a run of earlier Danish productions and the first in the chronological list of her directed films that also includes After the Wedding, In a Better World and Bird Box. Connie Nielsen plays Sarah, Ulrich Thomsen plays Michael and Nikolaj Lie Kaas plays Jannik, with Sarah Juel Werner, Rebecca Løgstrup and Solbjørg Højfeldt in supporting roles. The film runs 117 minutes and was produced by Zentropa Entertainments.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.5 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from a much smaller pool of 118 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Suzanne Bier asked the actors to minimize their use of makeup.
- In the church, all those seated in the first two rows, with the exception of Nils Olsen, are officers.
- In the scene where Nikolai Lie Kaas's character is informed of his brother's death, the actor does not pretend to be drunk. He actually drank, deciding that it would be more believable.
