Chisum

Set in New Mexico in 1878, Chisum centers on John Chisum, a cattle rancher who has built a substantial spread near the Pecos River and allows local farmers to make use of its water. His position is challenged by Lawrence Murphy, an unscrupulous businessman who acquires stores and a bank and secures the cooperation of a corrupt sheriff, tightening his hold on the area through legal and illegal means. Determined to resist, Chisum opens his own store and bank to compete, and the struggle between the two sides grows into open conflict. Pat Garrett and the young outlaw Billy the Kid become involved in the fight.

Andrew V. McLaglen directed the film, working from a screenplay by Andrew J. Fenady, who also produced it. It was the eighth of the sixteen features McLaglen directed, following The Undefeated and preceding Fools' Parade. John Wayne leads the cast as Chisum, with Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, Glenn Corbett and Andrew Prine among the principal players; forty-seven cast members are credited. Made by Warner Bros. Pictures and Batjac Productions on a budget of four million dollars, the western earned six million worldwide.
