Set in the mid-nineteenth century, Jeremiah Johnson follows a man who turns his back on settled life and heads into the Rocky Mountains to live alone as a trapper. Unprepared for how hard the wilderness is, he struggles at first to feed himself and stay alive. An older hunter, Bear Claw, takes him in and teaches him the skills he needs, and in time Johnson learns to survive on his own. He comes to know the Crow and other tribes who share the mountains, adopts a mute boy, Caleb, and marries a woman named Swan. When an army patrol asks for his help, his life in the mountains changes and his anger turns against the Crow.
Sydney Pollack directed the film, the third of the seventeen features he made, following They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and preceding The Way We Were. Robert Redford plays Johnson, with Will Geer as Bear Claw, Delle Bolton as Swan, Josh Albee as Caleb, Joaquín Martínez and Allyn Ann McLerie in supporting roles. John Milius and Edward Anhalt wrote the screenplay, and Joe Wizan produced.
Made for about three million dollars, the film earned roughly forty-five million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from more than thirty-four thousand votes, while on TMDB it scores 7.3 from several hundred. A critics' rating of 7.1 from twenty-three reviews sits close to those viewer scores.
