A Stranger of Mine follows Takeshi Miyata, an upright businessman whose quiet Friday evening unravels into a tangle of chance encounters. Still reeling from his fiancée's sudden disappearance, Miyata is set up by his friend, the private detective Kanda, with a young woman named Maki. She has just split from her own partner and needs a place to stay, and Miyata, ever trusting, takes her in. The arrangement collapses when his former fiancée, Ayumi, turns up without warning. Maki flees, Miyata chases after her, and their brief connection sets off a chain of events involving stolen yakuza money, Kanda's own involvement, and Miyata's mounting troubles.
Kenji Uchida wrote and directed the film, which was released in Japan in 2005 and runs 98 minutes. It blends comedy, crime, drama and romance, with Yasuhi Nakamura as Miyata and Reika Kirishima as Maki. Sō Yamanaka plays Kanda, Yuka Itaya plays Ayumi, and Kisuke Yamashita and Hidekazu Mashima appear among the supporting cast.
On IMDb the film holds a 7.6 rating from roughly 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. The wider IMDb sample points to a solid, widely appreciated title, whereas the thinner TMDB figure reflects only limited audience feedback so far.
