Short description

After a convivial holiday dinner party, things begin to unravel when a husband and wife address some prickly issues concerning their marriage.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mr. Grace does not appear in the original work by James Joyce (1882-1941). This character was invented by director John Huston (1906-1987) and screenwriter Tony Huston, and was introduced into the plot primarily to recite the old Irish poem 'Donal Og'. Although this is a departure from Joyce's text, the poem nevertheless fits the themes of the overall narrative: like the song 'The Lass of Aughrim' that follows it, the poem tells of the suffering that love can bring to a young girl.
  • John Huston (1906-1987) was already too ill to film in Dublin, so all the scenes in Ireland were shot by a second unit.
