Short description

Sara, a video artist who makes intimate recordings with lonely men she meets online, answers an advertisement seeking someone for camera work. She travels to a house in the woods, where the man she finds claims to be a serial killer. Seeing a chance to create something far more striking than her usual material, she agrees to spend the day filming him, only to realize as the hours pass that she may have placed herself in a situation she cannot get out of.

Patrick Brice directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Duplass, who returns as Aaron opposite Desiree Akhavan as Sara. The film follows Brice's debut Creep and his second feature, The Overnight, and came before Corporate Animals and There's Someone Inside Your House. Karan Soni, Kyle Field, Caveh Zahedi and Jeff Man appear in supporting roles, and the production companies are Blumhouse Productions and Duplass Brothers Productions.

The film runs eighty minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 943 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 26 reviews places critical response noticeably above the general audience score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mark Duplass was trimming his own beard and accidentally shaved a patch of hair down to the skin. An explanation for this had to be written into the script.
  • The script was exceptionally schematic, and Mark Duplass and Desire Akhavan (who played Aaron and Sarah, respectively) improvised constantly, often surprising their scene partner with their inventions. This gave the film a natural and effortless atmosphere.
  • Sarah asks Aaron if he plans to kill her with a blender. He replies that he has never thought of it. This scene is a reference to Adam Wingard's horror film 'You're Next' (2013), where one of the characters is killed in exactly that way.
  • The main antagonist took the name Aaron. That was the name of his victim in Patrick Brice's 2014 film.
