- Director André Øvredal was inspired to make a horror film after watching "The Conjuring." He called his agents and told them they should try to find a good horror script. A month later, a script was found.
- Martin Sheen was initially cast in the role of Tommy, but he had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.
