The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Short description
In a small American town, a father and son work as coroners in the local morgue. When the sheriff brings them the body of an unidentified young woman found at the scene of a violent crime, they are asked to determine how she died. She carries no identification, her fingerprints appear in no police records, and the examination reveals no obvious cause of death. Father and son begin an autopsy through the night, uncovering clues that grow stranger as they proceed, while a storm closes in outside. The film takes place largely within the morgue and follows the two men as the mystery surrounding the woman deepens.
André Øvredal directed the film, which he made between Troll Hunter, his 2010 debut feature, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Ian B. Goldberg and Richard Naing wrote the screenplay, and Eric Garcia, Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh produced. Emile Hirsch plays Austin Tilden and Brian Cox plays Tommy Tilden, with Ophelia Lovibond, Olwen Catherine Kelly, Michael McElhatton and Parker Sawyers in supporting roles.
Made for about 4 million US dollars, the film took roughly 6 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 163,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 6.8 out of 10, from about 4,900 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 108 reviews places it close to those audience scores.

- The original title of the film can be translated as "Autopsy of an Unknown Woman."
- After Jane Doe’s body is brought into the morgue on a gurney, Emma leaves. In the scene where Emma’s car drives away, it is visible that the road is blocked. There is no room for an ambulance or any other vehicle to pass Emma’s car, and there isn’t enough space to bring the gurney to the building.
- Martin Sheen was initially cast in the role of Tommy, but he had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.
