Vengeance: A Love Story follows Teena Maguire, a single mother attacked by a group of young men in a park after a Fourth of July celebration. Her twelve-year-old daughter, Bethie, hides during the assault and escapes. The attackers are quickly identified, but a defense lawyer gets them released, leaving the case unresolved. Detective John Dromoor, a Gulf War veteran, takes it upon himself to pursue the justice the courts failed to deliver.
The film is a thriller and drama directed by Johnny Martin, the earliest entry in his directing filmography, which later includes Hangman, Alone and Off the Grid. John Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay, and Nicolas Cage, who plays Detective Dromoor, produced alongside Michael Mendelsohn. The supporting cast includes Anna Hutchison as Teena, Talitha Bateman as Bethie, Deborah Kara Unger, Don Johnson and Charlene Tilton. It is set in Niagara Falls and was made as a television movie, with 43 credited cast members and 119 credited crew.
The production had a budget of 28 million dollars and returned 15 million dollars worldwide, a shortfall against its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from roughly 9,900 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from around 347 votes, placing both audience scores in mixed territory.
