Fresh out of prison, ex-convict Ugo Piazza is met by Rocco, a psychopathic gangster who works for a boss known as the American. A large sum of money in dollars vanished during a handover before Ugo was jailed, and both the gangsters and the police are convinced he stashed it away. Ugo insists he had nothing to do with the theft, but his old associates keep him under close watch rather than kill him outright, and the pressure builds while he tries to clear himself and work out who really took the money.
