Set during the Ming Dynasty, New Dragon Gate Inn follows a power-hungry eunuch who governs a remote desert region as though it were his own kingdom. After a general is executed, his two children become pawns in a scheme to lure out a resistance leader. The children are rescued and end up at the Dragon Gate Inn, an isolated way station in the desert, where a group of swordsmen, the inn's proprietor, Jade, and others gather. Forces loyal to the eunuch close in on the same place, turning the inn into the setting for the confrontation between the two sides.
The film is a Hong Kong action thriller directed by Raymond Lee Wai-Man and produced and co-written by Tsui Hark, both key figures in the wave of martial-arts cinema that flourished around the turn of the 1990s. It was Raymond Lee's second directorial effort, arriving between Swordsman and Swordsman III: The East Is Red. The ensemble cast is led by Maggie Cheung as Jade, Brigitte Lin as Yau Mo Yan, Tony Leung Ka-fai as Chow Wai On and Donnie Yen as Eunuch Tso Siu Yan, with Yen Shi-Kwan and Yuen Cheung-Yan in supporting roles.
Released in 1992, the film runs 104 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from around 5,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.4 from a much smaller base of 157 votes. The two audiences broadly agree on its standing, with the IMDb figure reflecting a considerably larger number of viewers.
