Dark Command is set in Lawrence, Kansas, in the years just before the American Civil War, when the territory was divided over whether it would allow slavery. Bob Seton, a cowboy from Texas, arrives in town and takes a liking to the place, particularly Mary McCloud, the daughter of the local banker. He also crosses paths with William Cantrell, a respected schoolteacher, and the two become rivals both for Mary's attention and for the office of marshal. Cantrell presents himself as an upstanding citizen, but he harbors ambitions of his own, and after losing the election he turns to leading raiders who bring guns into the territory and prey on the settlers. Seton, now the law in Lawrence, finds himself standing against him.
Raoul Walsh directed the film, the fourth of the twenty-three features he made in chronological order, following They Drive by Night and preceding They Died with Their Boots On. John Wayne plays Seton, with Walter Pidgeon as Cantrell and Claire Trevor as Mary; Roy Rogers, George "Gabby" Hayes and Porter Hall appear in supporting roles. Lionel Houser, Grover Jones and F. Hugh Herbert wrote the screenplay, and Sol C. Siegel produced for Republic Pictures.
The production had a budget of about one million dollars, a substantial sum for the studio at the time. Audience scores place it in moderate territory, with a rating of 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,300 votes and 6.4 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample.
