Autumn Interlude

Set in 1942, this romantic drama follows Tatsurou and Setsuko, who fall in love upon meeting in Karuizawa. Their relationship faces immediate obstacles as Setsuko's parents have already promised her to another man. In an effort to be with Tatsurou, she leaves her hometown for Tokyo. The couple is soon separated when the war leads to Tatsurou's military conscription. Before he departs, they share a moment on a snowy mountain where they vow to remain devoted to one another until they can reunite. However, their hopes are threatened when Setsuko develops a serious case of tuberculosis.

The film was directed by Mitsuo Wakasugi, marking the ninth production in a career that began with Haha no nai ko to ko no nai haha to in 1952. The screenplay was written by Fukiko Miyauchi and produced by Toho Pictures in Japan.
