Black Rain

Two New York police officers, Nick Conklin and Charlie Vincent, arrest a member of the Japanese underworld and are assigned to hand him over to the authorities in Osaka. On arrival the prisoner escapes, and the two Americans find themselves pursuing him through a country whose language and customs they do not know. Their investigation draws them into a conflict between rival yakuza groups, and they are forced to work alongside a Japanese detective whose methods differ sharply from their own.

Ridley Scott directed the film, the sixth of the thirty-four features listed in his filmography in chronological order, following Someone to Watch Over Me and preceding Thelma & Louise. The screenplay is by Warren Lewis and Craig Bolotin, and the producers are Stanley R. Jaffe and Sherry Lansing. Michael Douglas plays Nick, with Andy García as Charlie, Ken Takakura as the Japanese detective Masahiro, Kate Capshaw as Joyce, Yūsaku Matsuda as Sato and Shigeru Kōyama as Ohashi. The credited cast runs to fifty-three names and the credited crew to 188.

Made for about 30 million US dollars, the film took roughly 134 million worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. Audiences rate it at 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 58,000 votes and also 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB, a smaller sample, while critics' reviews average 5.3 out of 10 from twenty-four notices.
