Short description
An American doctor travels to Jamaica to provide medical care for a wealthy man's brother, who suffers from a strange illness. While the patient believes he is being transformed into a zombie through voodoo magic, the doctor initially relies on her scientific training to treat him. As she investigates the condition and the surrounding environment, she encounters a local cult and begins to question whether the cause of the sickness is medical or supernatural.
The horror film was directed by Avi Nesher, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Rob Cohen. In Nesher's career, this project follows Timebomb, Doppelganger, and Mercenary, and precedes Our Loves. The movie features a cast including Jennifer Grey, Craig Sheffer, Daniel Lapaine, Kristen Wilson, Gabriel Casseus, and Tim Curry. Produced by Robert Zemeckis, David Giler, and Walter Hill, the film was made with a budget of 10 million USD. With a runtime of 111 minutes, Ritual holds a rating of 4.7/10 on TMDB based on 82 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- It was originally planned that the film would be the third in the Tales from the Crypt series (1989-1996) and would be produced by Universal, but plans were revised after Tales from the Crypt: Bordello of Blood (1996) proved to be a failure. Following this, Miramax acquired the rights to the film from Universal and removed all mentions of the Tales from the Crypt franchise so that it could be released as a standalone film.
- When Wesley grabs Paul's shirt, the collar is seen sticking up. In the next shot from a different angle, it can be noticed that the collar is folded down.
- Jennifer Grey's character's name is a reference to 'Alice in Wonderland.' Her name is Alice and her surname is Dodgson. Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles Dodgson.
- This was Ron Taylor's final role.
