Set in Edo-period Japan, this third entry in the Lone Wolf and Cub series follows Ogami Itto, the former executioner turned wandering assassin, as he travels with his young son Daigoro in a wooden baby cart. When he comes across a young woman sold into prostitution by a yakuza clan, he offers himself in her place to be tortured, a display of resolve that draws the attention of the clan's leader. She hires him to kill a corrupt chamberlain, and the assignment places him in the path of hired swordsmen and the forces of a scheming governor determined to stop him.
Kenji Misumi directed, working from a screenplay by Kazuo Koike, who wrote the original manga with artist Goseki Kojima. The film is the third of six Lone Wolf and Cub features Misumi made in 1972 and 1973. Tomisaburo Wakayama again plays Ogami, with Go Kato, Yuko Hamada, Isao Yamagata, Michitaro Mizushima and Ichiro Nakatani among the cast. Shintaro Katsu, who starred in the Zatoichi series, produced alongside Hisaharu Matsubara.
At 89 minutes, the film stays within the series' established length and style. It holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 6,100 votes and a 7.1 on TMDB from roughly 168 votes, indicating a solid reputation among viewers familiar with the series.
