Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell

Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell is the sixth film in the series adapting Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's manga about Ogami Itto, a former executioner who now travels Japan as an assassin with his young son Daigoro at his side. The long feud between Ogami and Retsudo Yagyu has already cost Retsudo most of his family. He turns to his daughter Kaori and to Hyoei, a son he fathered outside marriage and kept hidden, who commands the Tsuchigumo, warriors said to move beneath the earth and to fight without any code of honor. Since a straightforward battle has failed, the clan sets out to destroy everyone who comes into contact with the two travelers while Retsudo pressures the Shogun to have Ogami declared an enemy of the state. The conflict builds toward a large-scale confrontation in the snow.

Yoshiyuki Kuroda directed this sixth entry, working from a screenplay by Tsutomu Nakamura. Tomisaburo Wakayama, who also produced, returns as Ogami Itto, with Akihiro Tomikawa as Daigoro; Junko Hitomi, Goro Mutsumi, Daigo Kusano and Jiro Miyaguchi appear among the credited cast of twenty-three.

Released in Japan in April 1974 by TOHO and Katsu Production, the film runs eighty-three minutes and mixes action, adventure and drama with fantasy and historical elements. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 134 votes, a solid showing for a series entry of this age and modest reach.
