Short description

The Batman is a crime mystery set in Gotham City, where Bruce Wayne has spent two years fighting crime as a masked vigilante. When a killer begins targeting members of the city's elite, leaving cryptic clues behind, Batman is drawn into an investigation that reaches into the criminal underworld and into the history of his own family. Along the way he crosses paths with Selina Kyle, Oswald Cobblepot, Carmine Falcone and the killer known as the Riddler, and must work out who he can trust as the scale of the plot becomes clear.

Matt Reeves directed and co-wrote the film with Peter Craig and Mattson Tomlin, and produced it with Dylan Clark. It followed his two Planet of the Apes films, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, and a sequel, The Batman: Part II, is scheduled for 2028. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne, with Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Paul Dano as the Riddler and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. The production was large in scale, with a budget of 200 million US dollars and a worldwide gross of about 772 million.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.8 from more than 919,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 from over 12,500 votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 from 527 reviews places it broadly in line with those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea to portray Catwoman with long, frightening, unpolished nails – ones that looked like claws – belonged to Zoë Kravitz.
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Andrew Jack – a dialect coach who worked on the film and passed away on March 31, 2020, due to complications from the COVID-19 virus.
  • Soviet lenses from the "Helios-44" and "Jupiter-9" series were used to film the car chase scene between Batman and the Penguin. Vintage optics were used due to their unique optical distortion to create a soft contrast and an authentic, analog image style that cannot be achieved with modern lenses.
  • The working title of the film was "Revenge".
  • Ben Affleck was nicknamed Batfleck, and Robert Pattinson was often jokingly called Robat Battinbat on set. This nickname was coined on the Australian podcast The Weekly Planet.
  • Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz had been friends for a decade before being cast in the lead roles. Reeves thought Pattinson and Kravitz were the right choice for these roles from the very beginning of working on the script.
  • The protagonist's car is a muscle car. In Neil Adams' comics from the 1970s, Batman drove a car that was outwardly unremarkable so as not to attract attention.
  • Robert Pattinson auditioned for the role of Batman wearing the original Batman suit worn by Val Kilmer in "Batman Forever." However, his face didn't fit in the cowl, so he borrowed the cowl from George Clooney's suit in "Batman & Robin."
  • Matt Reeves stated that his version of the Riddler was partly inspired by the infamous serial killer Zodiac, who operated in California in the late 1960s.
  • Initially, it was assumed that Ben Affleck would direct the film and star as the main character, with Joe Manganiello playing the villain.
  • Robert Pattinson's screen test took place in Los Angeles in May 2019, while he was preparing to film "Tenet" (2020). Pattinson attempted to lie to Nolan about a family emergency, but the director, well-versed in Batman and Warner Bros., immediately figured everything out. When Pattinson told Nolan he had gotten the role of Batman just a day before starting filming on "Tenet," he was quite surprised that Nolan already knew and even congratulated him, even though Pattinson hadn't told anyone else.
  • The image of Bruce Wayne in the film was inspired by the image of Kurt Cobain.
