Fateless

Fateless follows György Köves, a fourteen-year-old Jewish boy in Budapest in 1944. His father is taken away to a labour camp, and György is soon seized himself while travelling on a bus and deported. He passes through several camps, where he encounters brutality, illness and death alongside moments of companionship, and meets people who urge him to hold on to his dignity. The story is drawn from Imre Kertész's semi-autobiographical novel, and Kertész himself wrote the screenplay.

The film was directed by Lajos Koltai, a longtime cinematographer making his debut as a director, and it stands first among the three features he has directed. Marcell Nagy plays György, with Béla Dóra, Bálint Péntek, Áron Dimény, Péter Fancsikai and Zsolt Dér among the credited cast of twenty-three. It is a co-production involving Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Israel, the United States and France, and it runs 140 minutes. Against a worldwide box office of about 3 million US dollars, it holds a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 64 reviews and a TMDB rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 92 votes, a gap that suggests reviewers responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
