The Big Sick centers on Kumail, a Pakistani-born stand-up comedian in Chicago who earns a living doing comedy while his traditional Muslim parents keep arranging meetings with eligible Pakistani women in the hope he will agree to an arranged marriage. He begins a relationship with Emily, a graduate student he meets at one of his shows, but keeps her hidden from his family. When Emily discovers he has never told his parents about her, the relationship breaks apart, and she then falls seriously ill and is placed in a medically induced coma. Kumail stays at the hospital, where he must deal with Emily's parents while confronting his own family's expectations and his feelings for her.
The film was directed by Michael Showalter, released in 2017 and running 120 minutes. It followed his 2015 film Hello, My Name Is Doris in his filmography. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon wrote the screenplay, drawing on their own relationship, and Nanjiani plays a version of himself. Zoe Kazan appears as Emily, with Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as her parents, and Anupam Kher and Zenobia Shroff as Kumail's parents. Barry Mendel and Judd Apatow produced.
Made for about 5 million dollars, The Big Sick took roughly 56 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from around 150,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.3/10 from about 2,700 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3/10 from 306 reviews places it above both audience scores.
