Short description

Genoan navigator Christopher Columbus has a dream to find an alternative route to sail to the Indies, by traveling west instead of east, across the unchartered Ocean sea. After failing to find backing from the Portugese, he goes to the Spanish court to ask Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand for help. After surviving a grilling from the Head of the Spanish Inquisition Tomas de Torquemada, he eventually gets the blessing from Queen Isabella and sets sail in three ships to travel into the unknown. Along the way he must deal with sabotage from Portugese spies and mutiny from a rebellious crew.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was made to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.
  • A more accurate translation of the title is 'Christopher Columbus: The Discovery'.
  • Even before the film's release, Marlon Brando (1924-2004) began demanding that his name be removed from the credits. He was dissatisfied that the film did not convincingly portray Columbus's involvement in the genocide of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.
  • In case Marlon Brando failed to show up on set, director John Glen cast Michael Gosard (1939-1992) in the role of Torquemada (1420-1498), which had been intended for Brando. On the first day of filming, Brando was indeed absent, and a scene was filmed with Gosard. Tom Selleck told Glen that he refused to continue filming without Brando; when news of this reached Brando himself, he arrived on set the next morning, and the scene already filmed with Gosard was reshot.
  • Marlon Brando's character wore heavy robes and cloaks in the film, which concealed radio equipment used to prompt the actor with his lines and actions.
  • Georges Corrafas landed the role three days before filming began, after Timothy Dalton turned it down.
