Short description
In the Scottish Highlands at the start of the eighteenth century, clan chief Robert Roy MacGregor borrows a thousand pounds from the Marquis of Montrose to buy cattle and secure a better future for his people. The money is stolen before it reaches him, and with the debt unpaid, Rob is drawn into a conflict that threatens his family, his name and his standing among the local nobility.
Michael Caton-Jones directed the film, his fifth feature after Scandal, Memphis Belle, Doc Hollywood and This Boy's Life, from a screenplay by Alan Sharp. Liam Neeson plays Rob Roy, with Jessica Lange as his wife Mary and Eric Stoltz as his friend Alan MacDonald. John Hurt appears as the Marquis of Montrose, Tim Roth as Archibald Cunningham, and Brian Cox as Killearn, among a credited cast of twenty-four. Made for about 28 million dollars, it took roughly 59 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 49,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from some 735 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.7 from 43 reviews, placing professional and audience responses close together. The film runs 139 minutes and was released in April 1995.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tim Roth believed he would be fired, as his character turned out to be quite eccentric. He even instructed his agent to start looking for new roles for him. However, director Michael Caton-Jones asked him to make the character as vulgar, pretentious, and eccentric as possible, and Roth was subsequently nominated for an Oscar for his role in the film.
- The entire film was shot on location in Scotland, mostly in such remote places that the only way to reach them was by helicopter.
- Jason Fleming appeared in a cameo role in the film, against the advice of his own agent. Fleming was determined to star in a film with his idol, Tim Roth.
- In one scene, John Hurt's character (1940-2017) laments the Queen's lack of an heir. This is a reference to her 17 pregnancies, which resulted in six miscarriages, six stillbirths, two cases where the baby lived only minutes after birth, the birth of a daughter who lived less than a year, and another who did not live to two years old, and the birth of her son William, Duke of Gloucester, who died a few days after his eleventh birthday and two years before Anne's accession to the throne.
- Filming in Scotland was difficult due to the constant rain and swarms of midges.
