Mace Bishop poses as a hangman to reach a Texas town where his younger brother Dee and Dee's gang await execution. After freeing the outlaws, the brothers flee toward Mexico with Sheriff July Johnson in pursuit, their old disagreements surfacing along the way. When a band of Mexican bandits stands in their path, the Bishops must set aside their quarrel and fight a common enemy.
James Stewart and Dean Martin lead the cast as the two brothers, with George Kennedy as the pursuing sheriff, Raquel Welch as Maria Stoner, Andrew Prine as Deputy Roscoe Bookbinder, and Will Geer as Pop Chaney. Andrew V. McLaglen directed from a screenplay by James Lee Barrett, and Robert L. Jacks produced for 20th Century Fox. The film runs 106 minutes and mixes western action with a romantic thread.
Bandolero! was the fifth of sixteen films McLaglen directed in chronological order, arriving between The Devil's Brigade and Hellfighters, both released the same year. Made for a budget of four million dollars, it returned twelve million worldwide, a solid result that indicates the film found an audience. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from around 6,300 votes, and on TMDB its rating is 6.6 from a much smaller group of 135 votes, showing steady, unspectacular approval from viewers on both platforms.
