The Glory Guys follows Captain Demas Harrod, an officer at Fort Doniphan who becomes caught between his feelings for Lou Woddard and the rivalry of the army scout Sol Rogers. When Lou cannot choose between the two men, Harrod withdraws and pours his attention into training a group of raw recruits who can barely ride or shoot. The ambitious General McCabe, eager for a victory that will bring him personal glory, leads these inexperienced soldiers on a campaign against the Sioux and later orders Harrod to take his men forward as an advance party. The mission leaves Harrod exposed, and the promised support is not what he was led to expect, so he and his soldiers must fight their own way out.
Set against the events surrounding George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn, the film is a fictionalized western that plays more like a universal war story about enlistment, training and deployment.
Arnold Laven directed, working from a screenplay by Sam Peckinpah, with Arthur Gardner, Laven and Jules V. Levy producing.
