Short description

Dear Dictator is a comedy about an unlikely friendship between a Caribbean dictator and an American teenager. General Anton Vincent, who has been ruling his island nation, exchanges letters with Tatiana Mills, a rebellious high school student who wrote to him as part of a school assignment. When political upheaval forces him to flee his country, he turns up at her home in an American suburb, where her single mother, Darlene, reluctantly lets him stay. Hiding out in the neighborhood, the general puts his expertise in toppling governments to use: he coaches Tatiana on how to start a revolution at her high school against the popular clique that dominates it.

The film was directed by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse, who also wrote the screenplay. It is their second feature, following Amateur Night in 2016. Michael Caine stars as the general, with Odeya Rush as Tatiana and Katie Holmes as her mother; Seth Green, Jason Biggs and Adrian Voo appear in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 7 million dollars and was made in the United States by companies including Aloe Entertainment and Digital Ignition Entertainment. It runs 90 minutes. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5 out of 10 from around 5,400 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 163 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Anton Vincent's fictional motto is "Homeland or Death." This is a literal translation of the phrase "Patria o Muerte," which became a symbol of the Cuban Revolution after being uttered in Fidel Castro's speech in Havana.
