• Gary Oldman replaced Nicolas Cage.
• The yacht's name – “Mary” – is a reference to a real vessel called “Mary Celeste.” This refers to a brigantine whose crew abandoned it for unexplained reasons, and which was discovered drifting in the Atlantic near the Azores on December 4, 1872.
• Emily Mortimer and Owen Teague agreed to star in the film mainly to have the opportunity to work on a project with Gary Oldman.
• The idea for the film came to screenwriter Anthony Jaswinski while watching pleasure yachts and boats depart from the shore with vacationers in Florida. He decided from the outset that the action should take place on a small vessel, not a huge cruise liner, as is often the case in similar ghost ship movies.
