Short description
Liz, a mute young woman, has built a quiet life for herself in a small frontier settlement, married to a widower and working as a midwife. Her past catches up with her when a scarred preacher arrives in the area. She recognizes him as the man who has pursued her since childhood, and she knows he intends to punish her for a crime she did not commit. Because she cannot speak, no one around her, not even her husband, believes her warnings, and she is forced to confront him herself.
Martin Koolhoven wrote and directed this western, which was his second film after Winter in Wartime, released in 2008. Dakota Fanning plays Liz, with Guy Pearce as the Reverend, Carice van Houten as Anna, Kit Harington as Samuel and Emilia Jones as Joanna. The production was a European co-production across several countries, made for a budget of 12 million dollars, and it earned about 2 million dollars worldwide.
It runs 148 minutes and blends western, drama, horror, mystery and thriller elements. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 49,000 votes, and on TMDB it scores 7.1 out of 10 from around 1,300 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 75 reviews is noticeably lower than those audience scores.
