Dreamchild

Dreamchild follows Alice Hargreaves, the woman whose childhood friendship with Lewis Carroll inspired Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, as she travels to New York in 1932 for a celebration marking the centenary of the author's birth. Now nearly eighty, she finds the attention overwhelming, and memories of her younger self and of the shy Reverend Charles Dodgson return, prompting her to reconsider the nature of their bond and its lasting effect on her life.

Gavin Millar directed the film, the second of the four features listed in his career, following Secrets and preceding Sex & Chocolate and Complicity. Dennis Potter wrote the screenplay, and Rick McCallum and Kenith Trodd produced. Coral Browne plays the older Alice, with Ian Holm as Dodgson, and Peter Gallagher, Caris Corfman, Nicola Cowper and Jane Asher among the credited cast of twenty-three. The British production had a budget of five million dollars and took back about one million at the box office.

On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from thirteen reviews, noticeably higher than the audience score on TMDB, which stands at 6.6 out of 10 from forty votes. That gap suggests reviewers responded more warmly to the film than general viewers did, though both figures point to a modest, mixed reception overall.
