Nightmares

Nightmares is a 1983 American horror anthology made up of four separate stories. In the first, a woman drives out late at night for cigarettes while a killer is at large in the area. The second follows a young arcade player whose fixation on a video game called Bishop of Battle pushes him to keep chasing its highest level. In the third, a priest who has lost his faith leaves town and finds himself pursued across the desert by a black pickup truck. The last story concerns a family that sets out to deal with a rat in their home and finds the situation is worse than they assumed.

Joseph Sargent directed the film, which sits between MacArthur and Jaws: The Revenge in his filmography. Christopher Crowe wrote and produced it, sharing screenplay credit with Jeffrey Bloom. The cast includes Cristina Raines, Emilio Estevez, Lance Henriksen, Richard Masur, Veronica Cartwright and Moon Unit Zappa, among 21 credited performers. Universal Pictures released it on a budget of about 6 million dollars, and it returned roughly 7 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7 from around 4,100 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.7 from 96 votes, so the two audiences agree closely.
