The Food of the Gods

A hunting trip to a remote Canadian island goes wrong for Morgan and his friends when giant wasps attack them. Searching for help, Morgan reaches a farm run by the Skinners, where an enormous chicken nearly kills him and the owner refuses him the use of a telephone. He learns that a strange substance welling up from the ground, which the farmers call the food of the gods, has been fed to their animals and made them grow to enormous size. The whole island turns out to be populated by oversized creatures, and the most dangerous are the giant rats, which begin hunting the human intruders. The film is based on H. G. Wells's novel The Food of the Gods.

Bert I. Gordon directed, wrote and produced the film, which sits between Picture Mommy Dead and Empire of the Ants in his filmography. Marjoe Gortner plays Morgan, with Pamela Franklin as Lorna, Ralph Meeker as Bensington, Jon Cypher as Brian, and Ida Lupino and John McLiam as the Skinners. It was made by American International Pictures and runs 88 minutes.

Reception was modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 4.7 from around 5,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5 out of 10 from about 128 votes, indicating a limited audience and mixed-to-negative viewer response.
