Mass

Two couples arrange to meet in a room at a church years after a violent tragedy upended both of their lives. Jay and Gail, still searching for a way to move forward, sit down with Richard and Linda for a conversation that neither side finds easy. What begins as a tense, awkward encounter gradually opens into a raw exchange, as the four parents confront the past and their differing ways of living with it.

Mass marked the feature directing debut of Fran Kranz, who also wrote and produced the film after working primarily as an actor. He assembled a small, experienced cast: Martha Plimpton and Jason Isaacs as Gail and Jay, Ann Dowd and Reed Birney as Linda and Richard, with Breeda Wool and Michelle N. Carter in supporting roles. Kranz shares producing credits with Dylan Matlock and Casey Wilder Mott.

The film was released in the United States in October 2021 and runs 111 minutes. Its critical reception has been strong, with a critics' rating well above the audience scores on IMDb and TMDB, where voters rate it lower but still positively, and the much larger IMDb sample points to a film that has reached viewers beyond its initial art-house release. Made independently by three production companies, it is a contained, dialogue-driven drama carried by its four central performances.
