The Nohara family's nightly rest is disturbed when a giant fish appears in their dreams and swallows them whole. Hiroshi then reads a newspaper report about an entire town that shared the same nightmare, which appeared to have passed. When Misae, Shinnosuke, Himawari and even the dog Shiro describe the identical dream, the family wonders whether Kasukabe is next. At Futaba Kindergarten, Shinnosuke discovers his classmates have all had it too, and a reserved new girl named Saki joins the class, keeping her distance from the children eager to befriend her.
This 2016 entry in the long-running Crayon Shin-chan series was directed by Wataru Takahashi, his second film in the franchise after 2014's Robo Dad Strikes Back, from a screenplay he wrote with Gekidan Hitori. The voice cast returns Akiko Yajima as Shinnosuke, Miki Narahashi as Misae, Keiji Fujiwara as Hiroshi, Satomi Korogi as Himawari, Mari Mashiba as Toru Kazama and Tamao Hayashi as Nene Sakurada. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation with Futabasha, TV Asahi and Asatsu-DK, it took about 22 million dollars worldwide.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.6 from 57 votes, a modest but positive showing for a series instalment aimed squarely at families. Takahashi went on to direct further Shin-chan features in 2018 and 2021 before moving to live-action work with The Obsessed in 2025.
