Scary Movie
Short description
A group of teenagers accidentally hit a man with their car on Halloween night and decide to hide the body rather than take responsibility. A year later, someone who knows what they did begins targeting them, and one by one they are stalked by a masked killer. Cindy Campbell, her friends Brenda, Ray, Shorty, Bobby and Greg find themselves facing a psychopath who seems to draw his methods from familiar horror films, and their attempts to work out who is behind the mask fuel the film's comedy.
Scary Movie is a parody of the slasher genre, released in 2000. It was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, his third feature after I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and A Low Down Dirty Shame, and the screenplay was written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Buddy Johnson, with Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans producing. Anna Faris plays Cindy, Regina Hall plays Brenda, and Marlon and Shawn Wayans appear as Shorty and Ray. The large credited cast and crew reflect the film's broad ensemble approach.
Made for about 19 million dollars, the film took in roughly 278 million worldwide, a return that made it a major commercial success. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 323,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from more than 8,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 119 reviews places it below both audience scores. A sequel followed in 2001.
What's left behind the scenes
- The character of Anna Ferris was modeled after Neve Campbell, who starred in all four 'Scream' films. It's not surprising that the film's main character is named Cindy Campbell.
- The name of the school that the film's main characters attend sounds something like “Corpse High School.”
- The role of Drew was offered to Jenny McCarthy, but she chose to star in “Scream 3,” which was filmed concurrently and released in the same year, 2000.
- Film director Kinen Ivory Waynes played an episodic role as a slave appearing in a promotional video for "Amistad 2".
- Interestingly, all the actors who played teenagers in the film are actually over 25, and some are even 30.
- In the scene where Cindy and Bobby are preparing to have sex, James Van Der Beek appears at the window, and at that moment the musical theme from the series "Dawson's Creek," in which he starred, plays.
- The role of Brenda was offered to singer Aaliyah, but she declined.
- The title "Scary Movie" was a working title for "Scream." Both films were released under the Dimension Films banner.
- At the beginning of the film, when the group hits a man, a headlight breaks, but a few minutes later the car is again intact.
- If you look closely, you can notice that the beer the characters drink is called Killer instead of Miller.
- The film's plot was a kind of combination of two screenplays acquired by Dimension Films back in 1998. Their titles fully reflect the parodic nature of the film: “Last Summer I Screamed Because Halloween Fell on Friday the 13th” and “Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween.”
