Peter is a sixth-grader who enjoys video games, time with his friends and his sneakers, until his recently widowed grandfather Ed moves in with the family. Peter is told to give up his bedroom for Ed and relocate to the attic, a change he resents even though he cares for his grandfather. With help from his friends, he sets out to make Ed leave, launching a campaign of increasingly elaborate pranks. Ed, however, is not the frail newcomer Peter expects, and he gives as good as he gets, turning the household into a drawn-out contest between the two over the room.
Tim Hill directed the film, which he made after The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the seventh of eight features he has directed. Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember wrote the screenplay, and Phillip Glasser, Marvin Peart and Rosa Morris Peart produced. Robert De Niro plays Ed, with Uma Thurman as Sally, Rob Riggle as Arthur, Oakes Fegley as Peter, Laura Marano as Mia and Cheech Marin as Danny. Thirty-two cast members and 195 crew are credited.
Released in August 2020, the 98-minute family comedy cost about 38 million dollars and took in roughly 43 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences are warmer than critics: on IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from 28,000 votes and on TMDB 6.4/10 from 1,093 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.3/10 from 121 reviews.
