Burn!

A British agent named Sir William Walker arrives on Queimada, a fictional Caribbean island under Portuguese colonial rule, and sets out to destabilise it by encouraging an uprising among the enslaved population. The aim is not independence for the islanders but a shift in control, so that British sugar interests replace the Portuguese monopoly. Walker befriends a man named José Dolores, who becomes the leader of the rebellion. Years later, Walker is sent back to Queimada to deal with the movement he helped create, which has grown powerful enough to threaten the very interests he once served.

Gillo Pontecorvo directed the film, which followed The Battle of Algiers in his filmography and was released in 1969. Franco Solinas and Giorgio Arlorio wrote the screenplay, Alberto Grimaldi produced, and Marlon Brando plays Walker opposite Evaristo Márquez as José Dolores, with Renato Salvatori, Dana Ghia, Valeria Ferran Wanani and Giampiero Albertini in supporting roles.

Burn! is an Italian production running just over two hours, blending drama, history and war. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from a much smaller pool of voters. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 15 reviews places it slightly below the audience figure on IMDb, indicating moderate but not unanimous praise.
