Frank Taylor works in a Detroit factory and expects to be made foreman when the position opens up. The job instead goes to Joe Dombrowski, a Polish-born co-worker, and Frank's plans for his family collapse with it. Bitter and resentful, he is drawn in by a colleague's talk about foreigners taking American jobs and joins the Black Legion, a secret organization that uses violence and intimidation against immigrants and minorities. The group's backing brings Frank the promotion he wanted, but it also pulls him further into its activities, straining his marriage and turning him toward alcohol and violence. When he tries to break away, the Legion threatens his family.
Archie Mayo directed the film, which Warner Bros. Pictures released in 1937, from a screenplay by Abem Finkel and William Wister Haines. It was the earliest of the three features Mayo directed listed here, ahead of Moontide and Angel on My Shoulder. Humphrey Bogart plays Frank, with Dick Foran as his friend Ed Jackson, Erin O'Brien-Moore as his wife Ruth, Ann Sheridan, Helen Flint and Joe Sawyer among a credited cast of 48. The film runs 83 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 4,200 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes.
