Elvira Madigan

In late nineteenth-century Sweden, a young tightrope walker known to audiences as Elvira Madigan meets Sixten Sparre, a Swedish cavalry officer who is married and has two children. The two fall in love and run away together, crossing into Denmark. Because Sparre has left the army, he cannot find work, and the couple's money and prospects steadily shrink as their situation grows more precarious.

Bo Widerberg wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Waldemar Bergendahl for Europa Film. It came after Widerberg's Raven's End from 1963 among the features he directed. Pia Degermark plays Hedvig Jensen, the performer at the centre of the story, with Thommy Berggren as Sixten Sparre. Lennart Malmer, Cleo Jensen and Nina Widerberg appear in supporting roles, and Yvonne Ingdal provides the voice of Hedvig Jensen. The film runs 91 minutes and belongs to the drama, history and romance genres.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 3,600 votes, a fairly solid figure for a 1960s Swedish drama, while on TMDB it also sits at 7 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 58 votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from seven reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores, suggesting a stronger response from reviewers than from the wider viewing public.
