A bank robbery in a coastal French town sets off a chain of consequences that reaches into Paris. The stolen money was meant to finance a large drug deal, so the thieves have disrupted other criminals' plans. Commissioner Édouard Coleman takes charge of the investigation, drawing on his knowledge of the French underworld. What he does not fully reckon with is how close the case comes to his own life: Simon, the man behind the robbery, is a nightclub owner and an old friend, and both men are involved with the same woman, Cathy.
Jean-Pierre Melville directed and wrote the screenplay, with Robert Dorfmann producing. It is the sixth of the six features Melville directed, following Le Cercle Rouge in 1970, and it was made in France and Italy. Alain Delon plays Coleman, Richard Crenna plays Simon, and Catherine Deneuve plays Cathy, with Riccardo Cucciolla, Michael Conrad and Paul Crauchet in supporting roles. The film runs 100 minutes.
Audience response has been solid rather than overwhelming: on IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 300 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 22 reviews places it close to the audience scores on IMDb and slightly above the TMDB figure.
