Melville Farr is a London barrister whose professional rise and happy marriage appear to make for a settled life. That surface is threatened when a young man he knew, Jack Barrett, is arrested for embezzling money and then found dead in his cell. Barrett had been paying blackmailers who knew about his homosexuality, which was then a criminal offence in Britain, and Farr finds himself drawn into the same trap. Rather than give in, he chooses to help the police identify the people behind the extortion, putting his career, his marriage and his private life at risk.
Basil Dearden directed the film, which was released in 1961 and followed Sapphire in his filmography. Dirk Bogarde leads the cast as Farr, with Sylvia Syms as his wife Laura, and Dennis Price, Anthony Nicholls, Peter Copley and Norman Bird among the credited players. The screenplay is credited to Janet Green and John McCormick, with Bogarde also named; Michael Relph produced.
The film runs 101 minutes and is a British crime drama and thriller. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.7 from around 8,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 7.5 from roughly 164 votes, indicating a strong reputation among viewers on both platforms.
