Let the Sunshine In is a French-Belgian comedy-drama about Isabelle, a divorced Parisian painter in her fifties who is searching for real love. Recognised as an artist and raising her son on her own, she moves through a series of encounters with men that leave her disappointed rather than fulfilled. Among them are a banker interested mainly in physical pleasure and a younger actor testing his charm. Seeking answers about whether lasting love is possible, she turns to a fortune teller. The film was adapted from Roland Barthes' book A Lover's Discourse: Fragments. Juliette Binoche plays Isabelle, the central role around which the other characters revolve. Claire Denis directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Christine Angot, and Olivier Delbosc produced. The cast of twenty-one credited performers also includes Xavier Beauvois as Vincent, Philippe Katerine as Mathieu, Josiane Balasko as Maxime, Sandrine Dumas as Ariane and Nicolas Duvauchelle as an actor.
The film was released in September 2017 and runs 94 minutes. It is the tenth of fifteen features Denis has directed in chronological order, following Venice 70: Future Reloaded and preceding High Life. Made for about 3 million dollars, it sits among her smaller-scale productions.
Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 8,300 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.2 out of 10 from roughly 222 votes. These figures point to a film appreciated by part of its viewers but not broadly embraced.
