Test Pilot stars Clark Gable as Jim Lane, a daring aviator whose love of flying repeatedly pulls him away from the people trying to keep him grounded. After a forced landing on a Kansas farm, he meets Ann Barton, played by Myrna Loy, and the two marry quickly despite her existing engagement. Ann soon comes to understand the risks of her husband's profession, while Jim's longtime friend and mechanic, Gunner Morse, played by Spencer Tracy, stands by him through the dangers and pressures of the work. The film follows the strains that Jim's career places on his marriage and his friendship.
Victor Fleming directed the film, which sits between Captains Courageous and Gone with the Wind in his filmography. It was produced by Louis D. Lighton for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from a screenplay by Vincent Lawrence and Waldemar Young, with Lionel Barrymore appearing as the manufacturer Howard B. Drake among a credited cast of twenty-three. On IMDb the film holds a 6.8 rating from around 3,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller pool of 93 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from nine reviews places it in line with the IMDb audience figure. The film runs 118 minutes.
