Ulysses

Ulysses is a 1954 Italian adventure fantasy film directed by Mario Camerini, based on Homer's Odyssey. Kirk Douglas plays the title role of the Greek hero returning from the Trojan War to his kingdom of Ithaca. His voyage stretches across ten years, during which he and his crew face a series of mythical ordeals, among them the one-eyed Cyclops, the enchantress Circe and the song of the sirens. On Ithaca, his wife Penelope holds off the suitors pressing her to remarry, while the gods, Poseidon above all, keep delaying his homecoming.

Camerini directed the film in the later part of a career that stretched back to the silent era. The screenplay is credited to Ben Hecht, Ivo Perilli and Franco Brusati, and Carlo Ponti and Dino De Laurentiis produced. Silvana Mangano takes two roles, Circe and Penelope, with Anthony Quinn as the suitor Antinous, Rossana Podestà as Nausicaa, Jacques Dumesnil as Alcinous and Daniel Ivernel as Eurylochus, part of a credited cast of twenty-two.

The film runs 100 minutes and took about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 5,500 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.6, from around 257 votes.
