After a long war, Arthur unites England under his rule with the help of Lancelot, his most loyal knight. Arthur is crowned king and marries Guinevere, but the defeated Modred learns of the bond between the queen and Lancelot and uses it to undermine the reign. Advised by Merlin, Lancelot leaves the court, though he returns when civil war breaks out. The story draws on the Arthurian legends, with the screenplay credited to Thomas Malory alongside Talbot Jennings and Jan Lustig.
Richard Thorpe directed the film, which followed his 1952 release Ivanhoe and preceded Athena and Jailhouse Rock in his filmography. Robert Taylor plays Lancelot, Ava Gardner plays Guinevere, Mel Ferrer plays Arthur, Anne Crawford plays Morgan Le Fay, Stanley Baker plays Modred and Felix Aylmer plays Merlin. Pandro S. Berman produced, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made the picture through its British studios. The budget was about 3 million dollars, and it took roughly 5 million dollars worldwide.
The film runs 115 minutes and mixes action, adventure, drama, fantasy and romance. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from around 4,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 from about 93 votes.
