Charlie's Angels
Short description
Charlie's Angels is about a private detective agency run by the never-seen millionaire Charlie, whose three operatives, Natalie, Dylan and Alex, are experts in disguise, martial arts and technology. When Eric Knox, the founder of Knox Technologies, is kidnapped, the agency is hired to find him and stop his rivals from getting hold of his voice-recognition software, an invention that could destroy personal privacy on a global scale. The investigation points toward Roger Corwin, a telecommunications magnate and Knox's business rival, and the three women use whatever cover it takes to get close to him. The case turns out to be more personal and more dangerous than it first appears, putting the team in serious jeopardy.
The film was directed by McG and written by John August, Ed Solomon and Ryan Rowe, and it opened in November 2000. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu play the three leads, with Bill Murray as their colleague Bosley, Sam Rockwell as Knox and Tim Curry as Corwin. Produced in part by Barrymore's company Flower Films, it was the first feature McG directed; he went on to make its sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, in 2003, followed by titles including We Are Marshall and Terminator Salvation. On a budget of 92 million dollars, it took in about 264 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response was moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from 207,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9/10 from 4,643 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 6.4/10 from 145 reviews, higher than either audience score.
What's left behind the scenes
- The secret language of the "angels" is Finnish.
- The character played by Crispin Glover originally had lines, but the actor disliked them so much that he asked for them to be removed. Director McG and producer Drew Barrymore did not object.
- According to Icelandic singer Björk, she was invited to play the villain, but she turned down the offer.
- Many candidates were considered for the role of Alex, including Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, and Victoria Beckham. Tandie Newton was offered the role but later declined. Ultimately, Lucy Liu played Alex.
- After Dylan, played by Drew Barrymore, crashes, she ends up practically undressed in a house where two boys are playing video games. This same house appeared in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (Steven Spielberg, 1982), where Barrymore played one of her first roles in film.
- Drew Barrymore acquired the film rights shortly before filming began. This decision earned her $80 million.
- To prepare for their roles, the actresses trained in martial arts for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 3 months.
- Barrymore, one of the producers, doesn't particularly like firearms, so the Angels are presented in the film as martial arts experts. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu underwent intense training for their roles under the guidance of renowned Hong Kong choreographer Yuen Woo-ping.
