All That Heaven Allows

All That Heaven Allows follows Cary Scott, a well-off widow living in a small New England town, whose two grown children have their own ideas about how she should spend the rest of her life. She becomes involved with Ron Kirby, a younger, independent-minded man who works as a gardener and nurse, and the two decide to build a future together despite coming from very different social worlds. Their engagement draws hostility from her children, who see the match as a threat to their own lives, and from the country club set she has always belonged to. Cary is left weighing her feelings against the comfort and status she would be giving up.

Douglas Sirk directed the film for Universal, with Ross Hunter producing and Peggy Thompson writing the screenplay. It arrived in the middle of a run of 1950s melodramas, following Magnificent Obsession the previous year and preceding Written on the Wind and Imitation of Life. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson lead a cast of 39 credited performers that includes Agnes Moorehead, Conrad Nagel, Virginia Grey and Gloria Talbott. The film runs 89 minutes.

Released in August 1955, it holds a rating of 7.6 on IMDb from around 18,000 votes and 7.3 on TMDB from roughly 350 votes. A critics' rating of 8.1 from 32 reviews places critical opinion higher than the audience scores, suggesting the film has been more warmly received by reviewers than by general viewers.
