After the surrender of Geronimo, Massai, an Apache warrior, is taken prisoner and put on a train bound for a Florida reservation. He escapes and makes his way back toward his homeland, hoping to reunite with the woman he loves and settle into a quiet life of farming. White settlers and the cavalry have no intention of letting him disappear, and the pursuit forces him into a lone campaign against the men hunting him. The manhunt is led by the scout Al Sieber and the Apache tracker Hondo, while a betrayal close to home exposes Massai's whereabouts.
Robert Aldrich directed this Western from a screenplay by James R. Webb, with Burt Lancaster and Harold Hecht producing through their company. It was Aldrich's first feature as director in a run of seventeen films, ahead of Vera Cruz the same year. Lancaster stars as Massai, alongside Jean Peters as Nalinle, John McIntire, Charles Bronson, John Dehner and Paul Guilfoyle.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.3 from around 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 from roughly 150 votes. A critics' rating of 6 from ten reviews places it close to the audience scores. Running 87 minutes, it was released in July 1954.
