In 1860, Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok take on a mission to establish a fast mail route linking St. Joseph, Missouri, with Sacramento, California, with a target of ten days. The Pony Express faces opposition from stagecoach operators who see it as a threat to their business, from Californians wary of losing their independence, and from saboteurs who arm Native Americans and try to stop the riders. Cody also becomes involved with Evelyn Hastings, a woman whose sympathies lie with the project's opponents, while Hickok rides alongside him through the dangers of the route.
The film is a Western directed by Jerry Hopper, following his 1952 debut Hurricane Smith and preceding Secret of the Incas and Naked Alibi. Charles Marquis Warren wrote the screenplay, and Nat Holt produced for Nat Holt Productions. Charlton Heston and Forrest Tucker star as the two frontiersmen, with Rhonda Fleming, Jan Sterling, Porter Hall, and Henry Brandon in supporting roles. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.8 from around 1,600 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.8, from a much smaller group of 28 voters.
