Sinbad the Sailor

Sinbad the Sailor is a 1947 American adventure film from RKO Radio Pictures, directed by Richard Wallace and written by John Twist. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. plays Sinbad, a boastful sailor who tells a group of merchants the story of his eighth voyage. Having come into possession of a ship and a map showing where Alexander the Great's treasure lies hidden, he sets out for the island of Deryabar, gathering companions and rivals along the way. Among them are his friend Abbu, played by George Tobias, and the beautiful Shireen, played by Maureen O'Hara. The greedy Emir of Daibul, played by Anthony Quinn, wants both the treasure and Shireen for himself, while the scheming Melik, played by Walter Slezak, pursues his own designs on the hoard. Jane Greer appears as Pirouze.

The film runs 116 minutes and was made for about 2 million dollars, a considerable sum for its time, which shows in the scale of its costuming and sets. It sits third in Wallace's directing career by the chronological order given, following Madame Mystery and preceding Tycoon and Adventure in Baltimore. Fairbanks, a major star of the era, heads a credited cast of twenty-three.
