The Suicide Squad
Short description
The Suicide Squad follows a group of imprisoned supervillains recruited by the government for a mission they are not expected to survive. Amanda Waller assembles them from Belle Reve, a high-security prison, and sends them to Corto Maltese, an island nation recently shaken by a military coup. Each member has an explosive device implanted in their head to ensure compliance, and the team is dropped into hostile jungle terrain with orders to carry out a search-and-destroy operation. Colonel Rick Flag is assigned to keep the group in line, though the squad, which includes Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark and Ratcatcher 2, proves difficult to control. The ensemble cast also features Idris Elba, John Cena, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone and Viola Davis.
James Gunn wrote and directed the film, his sixth directorial feature after Slither, Super, Movie 43 and two Guardians of the Galaxy films, and it precedes his later work on the Guardians holiday special and third volume. Charles Roven and Peter Safran produced it for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films.
The film had a budget of 185 million USD and returned 169 million USD worldwide, a modest result against its cost. Audiences have rated it well, with an IMDb score of 7.2 from 456,000 votes and a TMDB score of 7.4 from 9,916 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 from 383 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.

- Director and screenwriter James Gunn considers Polka-Dot Man (played by David Dastmalchian) one of the most absurd characters in DC Comics, and therefore intentionally chose him for the film to try to turn a silly villain into a deep, tragic character.
- James Gunn specifically filmed with lesser-known villains, as he believed it better captured the spirit and atmosphere of John Ostrander's comics. Here's how he explained it: “I wanted to showcase second-tier villains, just like in the original comics.
